Winter Tyres are designed for cold weather, for temperatures under 7c on any road; it is quoted, that it is at this temperature normal tyres loose their effectiveness.  In cold and freezing conditions the compound and rubber of normal tyres begins to harden which results in loss of grip.  This in turn affects your traction and increases your braking distance

Winter tyres give you considerably more grip than all season tyres because they contain more natural rubber which stops the tyre from hardening in cold conditions giving you better grip, better traction and better braking ability.
